National Wildlife Foundation image terms

January 25th, 2010 · No Comments

I got an email from the National Wildlife Foundation a bit ago, asking if they can use one of my images for their “Wildlife Watch campaign and other NWF programs.” I thought that was pretty cool!

But “cool” changed as I kept reading:

We ask that you give NWF and its affiliated organizations a
non-exclusive right to use, publish, reproduce, modify,
adapt and distribute your Image(s) at any time in any manner
or medium whether existing now or yet to be developed,
including without limitation use in print, presentations,
Internet, electronic, wireless, television, mailed
promotions, exhibits and press releases. Wherever feasible,
NWF shall credit the photograph. No payment will be made to
you for the use of the Images.

If you decide to donate this photo or any other additional
pictures to NWF, we ask that you include the following
information in your return email – your full name, mailing
address, and email address. This information is important
if we need to contact you in the future about your photo.

Whoa…
I’ve had photos in two books and a magazine and THEY didn’t even ask for that much. I’m going to have to give this some thought…

Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual World Wide Photo Walk

Scott Kelby's 2nd Annual World Wide Photo Walk

I didn’t plan on attending Scott Kelby’s 2nd Annual World Wide Photo Walk.  I knew it took place on a weekend and I knew I worked weekends.  I didn’t even bother to check the website at www.worldwidephotowalk.com until the night before.  It was then, just before bed, that I discovered that the Portland area actually had 4 diffent walks (might have been more, I didn’t even look to see if there was anything in Vancouver, WA).  Sadly I discovered that a photographer I almost idolize was leading a walk first thing in the morning.  That walk, lead by Scott Borne, was out of the question.

I hemmed and hawed it the rest of the day.  There was one evening walk in the Pearl District of Portland.  I’m in that area VERY often as my wife works there.  Just blocks away is one of Portland’s largest photography shops, Pro Photo Supply.  I practically know the area inside and out. I didn’t plan on attending. “Been there, done that” thoughts in my head… [Read more →]

more new gear!

more new gear!

Now that I’m working again, its easier for me to find a few bucks for some new photo gear (which is a lot more expensive than new fishing gear – at least up front). This week I found that Citizen’s Photo had an older Canon 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 on their used rack for a scant $50. Thats perfect, I told myself, and went down to take a look. I know its not the best lens in the world, but I have a GIANT hole in my lens lineup for anything over 105mm.

So I ran on down to take a look. [Read more →]

I’m still here!

June 14th, 2009 · No Comments

I'm still here!

Sorry for the lack up updates. Just like a year ago, I found myself in trouble because of my photography. Unlike a year ago I did lose my job because of it. I don’t remember ever being told this, but I guess I wasn’t supposed to be taking pictures at all. Its done and over now and I’m trying to get back into things

I’ve spent the last couple months out fishing. Leaving my camera behind for all but a couple days. Those days I did bring it, I was never happy with the outcome. Pushing the limits of a cheap low range tele, combined with an old crop sensor just didn’t add up to quality photography.

I did, just the other week, have a portrait shoot for Portland-based author and inventer (shootersrack.com) Orin Porter. Orin has a his first book (a psycho-thriller) do out this summer and, naturally, needed a portrait for the rear cover insert. He is VERY photogenic and the shoot took just minutes. I was happy with most all the pictures taken and look forward to seeing what he and the editors settle on.

Not sure when I’ll be back to taking regular photography. The new job is exhausting, and I’m still using my free time at the rivers or ocean studying the feeding habits of tasty fishes.
